Coal Pit is a boutique family property in Central Otago, New Zealand, committed to producing world class wines from the BioGro certified organic vineyard and on-site winery. Located in the South Island, Central Otago is NZ’s most inland grape growing region, characterised by vast undulating landscapes, rugged snow capped mountains, clear blue rivers, deep gorges and tussock clad hillsides. The extreme seasonality is perfect for producing high-quality fruit.

Coal Pit covers 12 hectares of land (7 hectares of vines) on the elevated, warm north-facing slopes of Gibbston, the highest and coolest of the sub- regions in Central Otago. The family is committed to sustaining the land for future generations and has planted a 3 hectare native forest adjacent to the vineyard. Our winemaker also lives onsite in an historical stone cottage and is a huge proponent for regenerative viticulture, introducing edible cover crops and beehives to the vineyard.

Coal Pit is named after the nearby mountain ranges which provided the early gold miners with coal as they passed over the saddle. The flagship wine ‘Tiwha’ pays tribute to Rosie, the owner’s late father.
